Policy history that built the wealth gap

June 16, 2023 Posted by kwile@stcollab.com Systemic Reflections

In the history of the US, laws and policies were put in place that slowly and surely created a wealth gap between Black Americans and Euro Americans.

Join me for a tour through US history of the laws and policies blocking the American Dream for many Black Americans, and other People of Color. Though there are overlaps in recent decades, follow up blogs will focus on laws and policies that created barriers for Indigenous, Asian, and Latino/a people to the American Dream.

Want to understand more about the feedback structure for the American Dream and the related wealth gaps? Check out this post about the structure-of-inequity-and-racism-in-the-us. For those who prefer to listen, I created a brief explainer video for an industry conference below.

The first step to the work of making a better nation, a more just society, is taking an honest look at ourselves, our laws, and policies.

The next step is to make sense of all the truth. I hope these offerings can contribute in some small way.

The next steps will be to design, then execute, corrective solutions to the problems we face. This step is necessarily collective.

Finally, we need to assess, tell the truth about, the effectiveness of solutions we have tried, and start the process again. These steps are the learning process.

Together we can learn to do better. I offer these in the earnest hope for a better future for all of us, We the People.
